Angels Newsletter #34
Dear Friends of Angels of the Amazon,
We are pleased to communicate about the good progress on projects for the people of the Tahuayo River basin.
Advances in Health Care
In 2025, the addition of staff to our Angels of the Amazon (AoA) hospital significantly improved the healthcare services provided to the region. Linda Pinedo, one of our sponsored students, graduated in 2024 with a degree in medical laboratory technology. In January, she was hired as a lab technician at the hospital. Her addition has enabled the hospital to serve more patients requiring lab work and allowed for more staff to be deployed for community outreach. The community outreach program is one of the hospital’s most essential services. In this service, hospital staff provide treatment, checkups and health education.
Before 2023, the hospital director had to hire boat drivers as needed and could only do so in emergencies. In 2023 we were able to hire a permanent boat driver, and this year we expanded his role to include transportation for community outreach. As a result, there has been an increase in visits focused on maternal health education. The hospital director has noted an increase in the number of women attending prenatal and postnatal care appointments, which can be attributed to improved education. This initiative has greatly contributed to our mission of ensuring safe childbirth and reducing infant and maternal mortality rates.
New Educational Infrastructure
In August 2025, AoA completed three major school infrastructure projects. Before August, the 6th-grade students at Esperanza School used the school’s kitchen as a classroom and the school’s roof was in a state of severe disrepair. In addition to the repairs needed for Esperanza School, the Jane Gordon Cook School in El Chino Village required upgrades to the teacher housing. Teachers are sent to this remote region by the Peruvian government’s Ministry of Education. Any teacher from the closest city, Iquitos, would have to travel 9 to 10 hours by water bus to return home. AoA observed years ago that these teachers did not want to stay in their positions due to the distance from their homes.
This situation created instability in the school environment and caused concerns about gaps in the children’s education. It is for this reason that ensuring comfortable lodging for teachers and principal is considered a priority by AoA. Along with our partners at Be the Change Volunteers (BTCV), we constructed a new classroom for Esperanza school, repaired the school’s roof and expanded teacher housing for the school in El Chino.
Sustainable Economics
In March 2025, we launched a new project called “Asociación Avícola La Granja,” a chicken farm located in El Chino. The goal of this project is to create a sustainable source of income and ensure food security. This past summer, we built the first chicken coop and provided the necessary supplies to support our initial batch of chicks. In October, an agricultural expert from Iquitos visited to offer education and training for the farm. Thanks to our donors, we will be adding more chicken coops in the near future.
In October, two artisans representing the Manos Amazonicas group traveled to Tarapoto to participate in the Expoamazónica fair. Expoamazónica is one of the biggest artisan fairs in the region. Thanks to our generous donors, we were able to cover the cost of new uniforms, flights, meals, and transportation for their stay. This was the first time any Manos Amazonicas artisans have traveled by airplane to sell their handicrafts, and we look forward to supporting them again in the future.
