Dear Friends of Angels of the Amazon
What an incredible, busy summer we had at AoA this year. We have some super exciting news to share with you. We continue growing as a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the communities in the Tahuayo River basin. Follow Angels of the Amazon on Facebook and keep up to date with our recent news!
Education
School sessions continue for this year and attendance has been nearly perfect. The students are empowered by their new Elementary school classroom just recently finished in September by our partners the Be The Change Volunteers. The leaders of the community of El Chino, students, parents, and volunteers worked together through the sun and rain to make this project happen. Made with a strong concrete foundation it will last for many years to come. The classroom is beautiful!
Solar Energy for Classrooms
Another project added to the school this summer was the installation of modern equipment for solar energy. All the classrooms were wired, and bulbs and outlets were placed in each classroom. The storage house for the solar project was built from concrete cement up on stilts high to keep safe and dry. With these new advancements, teachers are able to give extra sessions in the afternoon to the students who need extra help in some subjects. Some of these utilities may seem to be simple to many people, but are rare, in remote places like the Amazon jungle.
ENMA (Empowering Girls and Women in the Amazon)
AoA partnered with the high schools in the Tahuayo area and the organization ENMA (empowering girls and women in the Amazon) to work with students, especially teenagers, from different communities to provide health and sex education. By providing these workshops, we hope to prevent early pregnancy and avoid STDs among the youth.
Nursing Students
We have several students supported by AoA receiving continuing education in Iquitos city. There are currently several young women in the nursing program. After they graduate from school, some wish to come to serve in AoA Hospital in Esperanza Village to give back to their community. AoA also has one student supported in Lima, majoring in Economics at the University of El Pacifco in Lima.
Healthcare
Angels of the Amazon Hospital continues to provide excellent care to our patients. The hospital is open 24 hours every day. Over the last few months, our medical professionals had to deal with several emergencies, some due to risky pregnancies in young mothers. Our nurses are trained to handle childbirth and other medical issues related to women. AoA hospital is considered to have high standards of care for its patients and it is certified and recognized by the Ministry of Health in Peru.
Solar Powered Water System
In November we will be installing a new water system for the hospital. This new system will have an electric pump which will be powered 100% by solar panels instead of the expensive gas generator. New communities outside of the Tahuayo area have started to come to the hospital and use the services. Our reputation of good, professional care has spread among the villages of regions just outside of the Tahuayo and fulfills the needs of those people as well.
Victor (child patient)
Finally, AoA recently took care of one boy in El Chino who suffered a serious compound fracture in the leg, with surgery and care at a private hospital in Iquitos. We appreciate your support to keep the hospital open and provide care to all people in need in the region. Victor is recovering very well in his home in El Chino village. Victor and his family are grateful to all who donated to his surgery!
Navidad en la selva
AoA will be hosting a Christmas brunch for several communities in El Chino. They travel far to come and celebrate with traditional panettone, hot cocoa, delicious grilled chicken, and other dishes. This is the time to get together with all our neighboring villages in harmony, and unity and celebrate togetherness, friendship, peace, and love. The children will be receiving toys and love. A recital will be presented with jungle carols by the children. The most enjoyable day of the year! Let’s bring the magic of Christmas with your help. Together we can do it!
Economics
The women artisans continue making new designs and creating new color combinations. Right now they are concentrated on making earrings, mixing traditional and modern styles.
